Divan Bed Set vs Buying a Base and Headboard Separately

When you're furnishing a bedroom from scratch, one of the first decisions is whether to buy a complete divan bed set — base and headboard together — or choose each piece separately. Both routes get you to the same end result, but the right choice depends on how much flexibility you want and how quickly you need everything ready.

A complete bed set is the simplest option if you want a coordinated look without having to think about matching fabrics and colours yourself. Because the base and headboard are designed and upholstered together, you know they'll fit and match perfectly straight out of the box — same fabric, same colour, same overall style. This is usually the faster option too, since you're placing one order instead of two, and it tends to work out better value than buying the same combination as separate pieces.

Buying a base and headboard separately makes more sense in a few specific situations. If you already own a headboard you like — perhaps an antique piece, or one in a fabric you can't get anywhere else — buying just a base lets you keep it rather than replacing something that still works well. Separate purchases also give you more freedom to mix things up: pairing a neutral linen base with a bolder velvet headboard, for example, or choosing a taller or shorter headboard than the one that comes as standard with a particular base.

There's also a practical middle ground worth knowing about: if you like a specific base but want a different headboard, our headboard-only range uses the same fabrics as our bed sets and bases, so a linen or Naples-weave headboard bought separately will still visually match a base from the same range, even if it wasn't bought as a matching set.
